espiox@louie I agree that I don't think this is a thing that most places could actually do, but every hotel I've stayed at in Japan does ask for my passport when checking in. I guess I've never pushed back on that though - I assumed it was required?
@espiox I should have clarified. They do not require ID / passports from residents. The rub is... they don’t know who is and isn’t a resident. This results often in a passport *request* for people they think might be traveling from abroad, but because they don’t *know* where you live, it’s a weird gray area.
If you live here, they might require you to write your address, which might “prove” it to them (somehow).
