@hackingbutlegal I think you have a really good read on it, and this path seemed clear enough to me in 2016 that I refused to do any government work and started to volunteer with peace activists. Between being in a military-centered city and issues with my mental health, my contracts dried up. Recruiters for defense contractors were hitting me up constantly, and I would tell them to fuck off. I honestly didn't know any way forward while keeping my morality and sanity other than leaving the US. I unfortunately still don't.
