Prior to 2011 it was believed that “Robinson Crusoe” (1902)🇫🇷 was a mostly lost film as only a few scenes had ever been found intact. A copy of the entire film was then donated to The Cinémathèque Française film archive in Paris where it was restored

Leading lady Enid Bennett was an Australian actress who began her career in an acting troupe led by American married collaborators Fred Niblo & Josephine Cohan that traveled to every major settlement in Australia. She would later marry Niblo after Cohan’s untimely death and by 1916, She would be living in NYC working both on Broadway and with Niblo on films that would establish him as one of the first major American film directors.

Bennett and her husband would both retire from films in the early 1930s but she’d continue taking sporadic roles until the early 1940 when after making just over 50 films she hung it up for good. Despite only making “Robin Hood’ (1922) together, she would remain close with co-star Douglas Fairbanks Sr. until his 1939 passing.

“Robin Hood” (1922) was the first ever film to receive what we now consider to be a standard huge Hollywood premiere night at Grauman’s Egyptian Theater w/ dozens of members of the press there, fans seeking autographs, a red carpet.. the works. The film would go on to make over $ 2.5mil in North America alone

A noted athlete and stuntman, Douglas Fairbanks Sr. insisted on doing all of his own stunts b/c he felt audiences would be able to tell if it wasn’t him. This led to the elaborate set to be constructed in a way that helped him achieve these feats

The massive castle set was designed by Lloyd Wright, son of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. It featured a real concrete floor and a drawbridge constructed out of wood-covered steel. Due to the shear size and cost of the set, Fairbanks would later reuse portions of it in “The Thief of Bagdad” (1924)

Fun Fact: Alan Hale Sr. is the only actor to appear in “Robin Hood” (1922), “The Adventures of Robin Hood” (1938) AND “The Rogues of Sherwood Forest” (1950) all in the same role as Little John.

I like learning about the lesser remembered actors like Enid Bennett. That info about Alan Hale Sr. was great. His son, of course, was The Skipper on Gilligan's Island. I can see the resemblance. There's a downloadable copy of Melies' Robinson Crusoe on the Internet Archive.
