縛り首 (shibarikubi): death by hanging. 縛 (shibari) carries the thread radical 糸, marking it as a character about rope and binding. 首 (kubi) is one of Japanese's oldest pictograms: a head with hair, from oracle bone carvings thousands of years ago. "Bound neck. " Chillingly literal. In Edo-period Japan, 縛り首 (shibarikubi) wasn't hidden behind prison walls. Crowds gathered to watch public executions, staged as warnings to anyone tempted by crime.
