šŸ™‹ Where are you getting your trustworthy, fact-based news these days?

No wrong answers, but as a citizen of the U.S. I’m personally curious about:

• News about the U.S., from an outlet that isn’t owned by a billionaire (U.S.-based or otherwise)

• News about countries other than the U.S.

• Industry- or beat-specific news, whatever that means to you, from indie outlets

Thanks! šŸ’œ

@ashur Financial Times subscriber since 2020 - it is expensive but trustworthy. They have good email digests, you can subscribe to topics you’re interested in, and they have an RSS feed with headlines for every published article
@ashur I read Talking Points Memo most days. I do also enjoy Heather Cox Richardson’s ā€œLetters from an Americanā€ despite it being on Substack.
@jgarber @ashur Seconding HCR, she is great
@ashur Usually The Intercept, Mother Jones, Talking Points Memo, 404 Media and I’ll scan NPR and the headlines from Kagi News
@ashur Ken Klippenstein, Techdirt (lately), Pro Publica, Texas Observer and The 19th are also good. Unicorn Riot had good coverage of Minneapolis, WTF Just Happened Today is good for overviews too.
@cory @ashur This is a great list! I read most of them too, but there are new ones too!
@cory @ashur +1 to Klipp, Unicorn Riot, and WTFJHT.
@ashur The Guardian for mainstream media, and my wife for reality via her trusted sources.
Political News for Normal People.

Your essential guide to the shock and awe in national politics. A sane, once-a-day newsletter helping normal people make sense of the news.

What The Fuck Just Happened Today?

@ashur Philip DeFranco on YouTube does 4+ videos a week, largely focused on the US news cycle (either internal news or US relevant global). Been watching for over a decade, still worthwhile, now very well fact checked and fairly fair. Can also be watched as a podcast https://m.youtube.com/@philipdefranco

Also BBC International (much less bias and spin than UK specific website, coming from a Brit), Financial Times, and Private Eye (much more UK focused, but does cover global news, and utterly trustworthy).

@ashur I'm liking Guardian and AP for US news. OPB for state news.
@courtney @ashur Also Oregon Capital Chronicle.
@ashur I watch mostly Aljazeera these days. They have some issues as well, but I found them a lot more balanced than most.

@ashur

Last Week Tonight, the Daily Show, and Have I Got News for You (US version).

(I mean, not actually exclusively. Also NPR supporter and 404 Media subscriber. But it's nice to have a little for the insanity.)

@ashur
it's really not great, but al jazeera is pretty ok for world news. no US bias, anyway

@ashur pro publica, npr/PBS, reuters, slate, editorial page of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

This one'll sound weird to anyone old enough: USA today and the other formerly Garnett papers. They're a public company with a lot of institutional investors but no single controlling interest to serve.

@ashur Several places, but The Economist is one of them. Here’s a writeup on their ownership. https://myaccount.economist.com/s/article/Who-owns-The-Economist
Economist

@ashur @Binder BBC, CBC and I find A Different Bias on YT very good. A northern English chap who is probably 1000x more trustworthy than any of the mainstream media. I followed his reports on Brexit back before Trump sucked all the oxygen out of the room. https://youtube.com/@adifferentbias
