is "GPL" pronounced "gipple" or "jipple"
"win one for the gipple" —ronald mwilson sreagan
@joe It's a G, like in G-wagon. GPL stands for German Programming Language, and hence you have to obey strict rules.
Or maybe it stands for Gangsta, not quite sure, but it would still be dangerous to call them J's.
@joe it’s pronounced “PLease don’t”. The G is silent
@joe Depending on where you work, it's either pronounced "gee pee ell" or "cancer".
@joe which version am i pronouncing?
@swags @joe gippl, or (at your option) jippl
@joe It had never previously occurred to me to pronounce it as anything other than "gee pee ell", but now that you've brought it up, it immediately becomes another front of the GIF pronunciation wars and so now I have no choice but to stridently insist upon "gipple" for the rest of my days.
@gregtitus @joe "gee pull"
@Catfish_Man @joe I'd be fine with "guh pull", but the hard G is now non-negotiable.
@Catfish_Man @gregtitus @joe  ”Which GPL version is your project?”
 ”How many gees are you pulling?”
@joe it depends on if you play golf or jolf, or if google is joojle or if engineers are enjineers :D
@joe It's pronounced "nipple" because the G in GNU is silent.

@brunoph @dalias @joe no no no, that's with a hyphen
@joe I bet the folks at JPL would like a go...

@joe The “G” in “GNU” is soft, the one in “GPL” is hard.

So “Juh-nu Gipple”

@joe
It sounds like "jeeple"
@joe The greatest thread in the history of forums, locked by a moderator after 12,239 pages of heated debate,
@joe no, it is not.
@joe and the slop bot is pronounced "chat jippity"
@joe Just because you posed the question, I'm going to start pronouncing it as "Whipple" with no explanation whatsoever.
@joe cheap pi al ?
@joe je-pe-el with an obviously fake French accent. Smoky voice is a ++
@joe after the gif debacle I’m not touching this one. Some people can’t take a goke.
@joe
Quite obviously, the G in "GPL" is pronounced like the G in "garage"!
@joe it’s actually more like “gunpla”
@joe it's pronounced ghee-poo-elle, like SQL.
@joe gipple. Just like gif.
