I received a phone call from a law office yesterday. Apparently when my mother passed away she left me property that she owned with my dad. The law office contacted me to ask me to take my name off the deed. I've been #nocontact with my parents for over 5 years now. I honestly don't remember if I've been told about this property at all.

Would it be worth fighting them on this? Is it worth going to court to get my dad's name off the deed? It would be amazing to get some extra cash from the sale of this property. The property in question has been for sale since December, but my parents didn't contact me until now and even that contact was through a secretary...

@Enlightenedharlot I'd say you own 50% of that property. That's worth something. If they want to get your name off the title, they can and should buy out your interest in the property. Asking you to give up 50% of the value of the property or the proceeds of any sale for nothing is unreasonable.

I'd see if there's an attorney around at a reasonable cost who can help you negotiate a deal and independent appraisal of the property to make sure they aren't low-balling you.

@tknarr The funny thing is that my dad feels he is entitled to the property. There was a malpractice lawsuit when my mom died and I was given a structured settlement. My dad was sooOOooo gracious (sarcasm) and didn't take any of the settlement money so he feels he is entitled to the property my mom left me. He's horrible, right?
@Enlightenedharlot hope you post an update. I’m curious what ends up happening here. Glad you got some good advice!
@PermaSolarPotter You are so sweet! Thank you. I called and left a message for a local real estate lawyer yesterday. Hopefully I hear back on Monday! If not the search for a lawyer continues.
