Ummm... Uh oh?😱 #NOAA Hurricane Hunter Gulfstream IV N49RF NOAA49 has a flight plan to come to Portland #KPDX tomorrow Sun Feb 1, 2026. I don't see an atmospheric river in Sunday's or #GroundHogDay's rain🌧️ forecast. But this may hint at an upgrade. Except when on an announced public outreach event, NOAA Hurricane Hunter planes are considered as alarming a sign as the Weather Channel reporting live from near your home. https://www.flightaware.com/live/flight/NOAA49/history/20260201/1600Z/KLAL/KPDX #aviation #weather #avgeek

#NOAA #N49RF "Gonzo" Hurricane Hunter Gulfstream jet arrived in Portland. A flight plan filed for Monday #GroundhogDay gives us a hint at the area of the Pacific they'll collect some sort of atmospheric data. https://www.flightaware.com/live/flight/N49RF/history/20260202/1915Z/KPDX/KPDX #aviation #avgeek #weather

Though #weather will move by tomorrow's flight, #NOAA #N49RF "Gonzo" Gulfstream jet will apparently be observing two east-west cross sections from above the storm which is off the West Coast. #aviation #avgeek
No photos but I saw through binoculars from home today: NOAA49 (Hurricane Hunter "Gonzo" Gulfstream IV jet) takeoff and landing at PDX. The flight track shows they pretty much flew what they filed. But now there's a better picture of the storm front they were observing over the Pacific. https://www.flightaware.com/live/flight/NOAA49/history/20260202/1915Z/KPDX/KPDX #aviation #avgeek
#NOAA Hurricane Hunter Gulfstream IV "Gonzo" N49RF departing Portland Int'l Airport #KPDX as NOAA49 this morning for #weather observations over the Pacific Ocean. Photo taken from home with optical zoom. No other processing besides cropping the image. #aviation #avgeek
#NOAA Hurricane Hunter Gulfstream IV "Gonzo" N49RF departing Portland Int'l Airport #KPDX as NOAA49 for the third consecutive day of #weather observations over the Pacific Ocean, getting research data on #AtmosphericRiver conditions. #aviation #avgeek
#NOAA Hurricane Hunter Gulfstream IV jet "Gonzo" cancelled its Pacific flight today and stayed on the ground in Portland. It looks like the #weather nearby over the Pacific today may not have been the kind of atmospheric river conditions they wanted to collect data on. But a new flight plan showed up for Friday, again returning to Portland. This is getting to be a lengthy #science deployment. https://www.flightaware.com/live/flight/N49RF/history/20260206/1915Z/KPDX/KPDX #aviation #avgeek

Today's flight has been cancelled for #NOAA Hurricane Hunter jet #N49RF "Gonzo". I'm not sure if the weather didn't turn out as interesting for research or the plane wasn't ready. Something like this also happened a couple weeks ago earlier in their deployment to Portland. #aviation #avgeek #weather #PNW
There goes Gonzo! #NOAA Hurricane Hunter Gulfstream IV jet "Gonzo" #N49RF departing Portland International Airport #KPDX in the rain at noon PST today for #science observations from above the front off the coast. The data from these flights are intended to get more data from above Pacific fronts to improve computer forecasting models after a major atmospheric river event in December increased priority of studying them. #aviation #avgeek #weather #PNW
#NOAA Hurricane Hunter Gulfstream IV jet "Gonzo" #N49RF continues their deployment to Portland to collect sensor data toward improving forecasts of Pacific atmospheric river storms. The plane has been flying out of PDX a few times a week since Feb 1. Today's flight starts earlier but is shorter. It looks like they don't have to go as far out to collect storm data today with a front coming ashore. [edit: Hmmm, flight plan was cancelled.] http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P%3Ac:%230fff3f,KPDX-OLM-ARRIE-48.30+N+124.63+W-CYVIC-DOLFF-48.19+N+132.38+W-FASEL-ZANNG-KYLLE-ONP-45.35+N+122.98+W-KPDX&MS=wls&DU=mi #aviation #avgeek #weather #PNW

NOAA Hurricane Hunters fly from PDX to study atmospheric rivers over the Pacific

If you’re at Portland International Airport and see a blue-and-white jet, it’s likely NOAA’s Hurricane Hunters.

@ikluft Interesting, that is for sharing these posts.

I wonder if it has to do with this program from CW3e:

@camless I found a news article from yesterday confirms your hunch. UCSD Scripps Institute is involved. https://avgeek.social/@ikluft/116184540490023593
