Anyone have recommendations for buying fabric online? All my local places have died and it's being a pain in the ass to make gear.

@kusuriya Not sure if these folks have the sort of stuff you're looking for, but we live close to both these stores and have made a bunch of neat stuff from their fabric

@kusuriya

Where are you located?

ETA: Continent suffices. I would have one shop recommendation in Europe.

@proscience the greater Seattle Washington USA area

@kusuriya

Sorry, that's outside my area of expertise.

Maybe ask in the American sewing forum PatternReview?

Registration is free, and there are plenty of Americans from all over the US who will be happy to chime in. Focus of the forum is garment sewing but IIRC I saw also people sewing raingear.

@kusuriya In the US? What kind of "gear" are you making? What kind of fabrics are you looking for?

@swachter might know.

@artcollisions @swachter Im mostly making bags and pouches. So im looking for canvas, cordura, and similar fabrics.
@kusuriya @swachter do you know about sailrite.com?
@kusuriya @artcollisions I buy most of my solid colored canvas from fabricwholesaledirect.com and have been happy with their prices and quality!

@kusuriya @swachter I have not ordered from them, but I have heard good things.

I'm very lucky to live near www.artisticartifacts.com and I get most of fabrics from them these days, but they do mail order too. They have some really beautiful canvas.

@kusuriya I'm in the UK and like Minerva, Croft Mill and Fabworks.
@kusuriya If you're making anything hiking/camping adjacent I suggest https://ripstopbytheroll.com/ - amazing customer service and the products are high quality
Fabrics and Materials to Make Your Own Gear or Grow Your Business.

As DIYers, we were tired of settling for generic fabrics while big companies had access to all the good stuff. So we launched Ripstop by the Roll - an online community for makers to find the world's best materials - plus the knowledge on how to use them - to successfully make their own gear or grow their business.

Options can differ wildly, depending on where you live and what you want to sew. There are many businesses these days that sell deadstock and/or repurposed fabric. In Western Canada, we have

Thankfully, we also have many brick-and-mortar stores, as well as a charity group that has a massive sale every April of deadstock, estates, and donated fabrics. That keeps me in projects for most of the year.
