The University IT department pushed a security update onto a bunch of machines without asking users on Wednesday morning.

Today my computer is finally working again, files save but otherwise the machine was completely reset without any of the apps (except Edge and CoPilot, because whatever you try these will never go…).

So 48 hours of work lost for some people, I was fortunate to be able to switch to lab work only.

This morning I am reinstalling all the applications on my computer.

Recommendations for FIJI plugins especially welcome at this time as I can’t remember all the ones I added!

Plus any software for a microscopist/biologist with temporary admin rights…

@JontyTownson having wiped out all my installed R packages this morning*, I’m wondering whether a fresh start is a good thing?! Just install what you need, when you need it again?

* I got them back in the end.

@steveroyle I think it has helped in some ways, for example I had switched from Mendeley to Zotero, but was hanging on to the Mendeley "just in case". Not anymore.

Regarding all of my very important and definitely in use tabs I had open in Chrome though...I may need a therapist...

@steveroyle I wonder if it would have been helpful to lose all the Python environments etc. See if I can reproduce them easily...

Yet to test them to be sure I won't have to though!

@JontyTownson hmmm now I'm thinking about my own disaster recovery scenario…

@JontyTownson @inkscape was always pretty high on my list for figure generation.

Any data analysis needs? #Octave, #Python ?

#NotepadPlusPlus is also a must for me.

Hope that helps

@dn_mason @inkscape Inkscape has indeed been put back, this time not via the University portal so that I can add extensions.

And analysis is in Python and R. In the reset the computer kept the files (not apps) including my environments, but I'm yet to test them...
