Collective fedibrain: what is the best way to plan an international trip by train in Europe? I'm planning a train drive between the Netherlands and the UK.

If it's just NL and BE before you cross to GB then I'd suggest b-europe.com (ie SNCB's international site).
Worth looking at bahn.de for more fine tuning of stopovers, but b-europe can do Eurostar reservations.

GB train travel is so expensive that it makes Interrail almost a no-brainer.
The Interrail app has a pretty decent timetable planner too.

Lastly, if you are open to left field suggestions, can I point out: https://saillink.co.uk

@bestdeadends @collectifission Wow, that's a very cool service. Sail across the Channel on a catamaran! Was not aware. Thanks for sharing.

I did it last August, with my bike. Am no sailor but loved it. Already booked for this year.

The only private site worth paying booking fees for in my view is https://railfinder.eu c/o @stefanlindbohm

Trainline are pure profit takers, in my opinion. Their UK advertising was misleading in suggesting they were cheapest. They spent milliions to establish a false brand image and now rake those millions back through booking fees that few other UK ticket vendors charge.

Railfinder

Railfinder

@bestdeadends

Maybe. They're the only ones I've used professionally since they make booking multi carrier trips easy.

Not trains, but Eurostar can be expensive:

The Harwich - Hoek van Holland ferry is worth considering. I eventually decided against it, and booked a Flixbus in one direction, Eurostar in the other.

+1 for SNCB international and Railfinder
