With #GrapheneOS announcing support for presumably more smartphones by #Motorola starting with with 2027 models, I can finally dream of getting a clamshell flip phone that combines good HW, a nice OS with a small form factor: #RazrUltra! 🎉🕺

However, with Google's new #desktopmode rolling out these days, it might probably worth to think about large folding phones like #RazrFold which might double as a notebook replacement using a BT keyboard & optional USB-C monitor connection. 🤔 It comes with more weight, size & a higher price tag. 🫣

My #Pixel8 will last a few more years anyway. It's more likely that the #OnePlus5 of my wife finally kicks the bucket so that she'll get the Pixel while I buy a Motorola.

Would you accept the downsides of the larger #Fold in order to replace your personal notebook? Would you be able to replace a #Linux desktop with an #Android? Well, at least there seems to be a native #Emacs for Android. Unsure if it'd provide same UX though.

@publicvoit I did set up something like this with samsung s21, nixondroid, openbox and emacs running in openbox with additional screen and keyboard. So good to go to work with the phone and nothing else.

Quite happy with this until you need to take notes in emacs during a videocall w/o the extrascreen.

@holl Are you able to use Ctrl-key combinations as well as ESC key? With my simple BT keyboard, many Ctrl-bindings are swallowed either by ssh-apps or the OS itself.

If this persists, this is an absolute no-go for me since I can't access remote hosts via ssh, use Emacs or vim.

@publicvoit everything worked as it should have. I don't remember fiddling with anything actually on that part.
@holl So it's safe to assume that I might be able to move my desktop Emacs setup to Android and use all bindings minus the dependencies to non-Elisp?
@publicvoit I would say yes. Actually i did set up the same environment as my laptop. Pretty much used the same configuration.nix and got aarch64 version of my dependencies (not so many, but pdftools, latex, ement worked)

Unqualifzierte Frage:

@publicvoit
I have Emacs for Android installed on my tablet, but I rarely use it. I don't use a BT keyboard and have to use Hackers keyboard to even be able to use Emacs, but this also has some drawbacks. I can open an org file from Nextcloud in Emacs on the tablet, which is nice (and which had some problems in the past) but Orgro works for my very simple needs just as well.

Personally, I can't imagine replacing a regular computer with a tablet or smartphone. This also has to do with the UX that Android offers. I already find it painful to type this lengthy toot.

@publicvoit I've used Android on a tablet occasionally, trying to troubleshoot issues for others. No thank you. If it's not a real operating system with an actual filesystem, forget it.
