@el_haych2024 @itsfoss I’m not totally convinced that this is the right decision. Motorola devices are neither cheap nor do they have outstanding quality. And I’m also not sure whether they’re at the same level as a Pixel when it comes to security.
But probably the best move considering that Google does their best to hinder custom ROMs. Unfortunately there is no pressure on Google to be more open. How was their slogan once upon a time? Don’t be evil…?
@NebulaTide @el_haych2024 @itsfoss
Ja, vor einiger Zeit "Don’t be evil…?".
Aber zu der Zeit auch schon nur ein Slogan ohne echte Werte dahinter.
Vielleicht als Wunschgedanke in den Anfängen bei Google...
I have a Fairphone and the biggest gripe I have with it is Android. I still can't believe Fairphone haven't read the room and provided and alternative privacy based option out of the box without having to flash firmware and risk bricking your phone. this is interesting
I use a Fairphone 4.
The Fairphone 6 can be ordered with Android or /e/OS .

yeh I know but that means buying a new phone again. I'm on FP5 and probably won't buy another one cause they have missed the boat for too long on this and not listened to their users who have asked for a privacy based OS out of the box for years
good for you. I had the FP4 before this and found it just slowed down and became annoying to use. granted part of that was down to me however when the camera stopped working completely I gave up on it. I don't want to spend hours rebuilding my phone and fiddling to make it work well but I do want privacy and you couldn't have both....but hopefully times are changing
@ma_delsuc @johnlogic @itsfoss
are you able to run apps on it? my FP4 just became unusable
@petitmote @johnlogic @itsfoss
yeh I've been following the threads and maybe missed something but I thought it was the community that did this port and a bit finicky to get working well...?
@petitmote @johnlogic @itsfoss
yeh that's exactly my point, it's not exactly a secret the community has been asking for this for years and FP seem to have just ignored it in preference to letting the community do all the heavy lifting
@slamr @petitmote @johnlogic @itsfoss
As far as I know it is sold with /e/OS as an option out of the box, even on the fairphone website.
Flashing manually, if you bought android, is as easy as it gets and for me it has been more stable and performative than android. One of the reasons I switched other than being fed up with google was because the performance wasn't good on stock android and /e/OS basically fixed it for me.
(FP5)
@slamr @itsfoss Flashing your phone won't brick it unless you really really REALLY screw up in ways that I just don't even know how you could actually do on accident. In fact, it's kind of hard to do on purpose...
I mean, ok, you could "soft brick" in flashing something that doesn't boot, but you just flash again the right way and it's fine.
I guess it's possible to lock the bootloader on a phone that doesn't allow unlocking via the recovery but with a bad bootloader installed, but even then you can flash a stock OS with the correct keys and it should boot so you can unlock it again. (Also just don't lock it until you know what you're doing. 🤷 )
Yeah, short version is you can't really brick it.
BTW Graphene likes locking. They'll come pre-locked.
ok the documentation gives another impression but haven't tried it. tbh sitting down and fiddling with my phone for hours to get it working is not enticing and that's exactly my point...many people want privacy out of the box
maybe I'll look at this again. thanks
I do agree that it would be nice if things gave us some actual options. We shouldn't have to install third party stuff to get basics. There should be a selection on purchase as to what comes stock. (And no bloatware crap that forces us to have to reinstall anyway.)
But sadly that doesn't exist and Graphene phones won't come with a selection either. If you decide you want, say, Calyx when it comes back (soon?) you'll need to unlock it and flash. If they let you. We'll have to see... (The dev behind Graphene is kind of stubborn about this stuff and I can absolutely see them declaring that unlocking being allowed at all is a security hazard and thus it should not be allowed.)
yeh that! ☹️
@slamr @itsfoss Well, depends on which box...

@itsfoss surprised... another American company 🤦♂️
> For the rest of the world, i guess neither a chinese nor an american company seems like a good idea
@lazysupper https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorola 🤔
> The mobility thing is owned by Lenovo... Guess looks like the reverse of tiktok
@sardon
I assumed the company that's been defunct for 15 years is not making the phones, but rather its successor:
@itsfoss Yeah, they've been letting people know they were trying to get a manufacturer in on this. Guess they found one.
The real question is, will they pull a OnePlus crap and suddenly decide profits are more important?
@itsfoss Unfortunately, Fairphones are the only phones I will buy from here onwards. Graphene should look at them instead.
Also, even though sanxboxed, they are using the google play spyware instead of microg replacement. They should focus their resources on sandboxing microg.
