There are certainly gyms in the US where you pay $25 a month (like Planet Fitness) but there are also $200+ a month chain gyms like Lifetime Fitness. Lifetime does have nice amenities and all kinds of classes, but ye gods is it a meat market. Even leaving aside the price, I like going to Planet Fitness because you can actually do your workout in peace over there. It's very laid back.
