Apple
@nixCraft, as much as I hate them both, I have to admit this looks neat
@nixCraft wondering why touch id is only on the 512gb version.
Also how is ram management with 8gb in current mac os?
I remember when the normal macbooks started at 8gb it was rough
@Jonly @nixCraft my wife has m1 with 8GB of RAM. Good enough for web browsing.

@Jonly @nixCraft

I have an M2 with 8GB ram and that is good enough to run multiple applications that I’m developing including two different databases. It’s comparable to Windows with 16 GB.

@Jonly @nixCraft 8Go is a bit light but you can do daily work with it. I have no problem using Lightroom/Photoshop unless I do heavy work such as focus stacking 20+ pictures:)
@nixCraft Huh. That’s going to upset the apple cart a bit. Pun intended.
@nixCraft Oh, if this could run Linux I would be all over it!
@rhempel @nixCraft I wonder if Asahi Linux could run on it.. but they only support M1 and M2 machines at this time I think.
@nixCraft this comes just in time for microslop to... no, not shoot themselves in the foot, but blow their own leg off
@nixCraft This strikes me as more of a problem for machines like the Framework 12” since it aimed squarely at the edu market. I think if they bumped to panther lake or a bit more beefy processor (and 2 ram slots though) they could perhaps compete as well as a slightly better screen.
@nixCraft

Seems kind of redundant with Microsoft's
#enshittification of Windows 11.

I'd still rather load Linux on lower-end hardware than use hardware saddled with either OSX or iOS.
@nixCraft > low end
> 600$
thats mid or even upper mid, far from "low"
@ralen @nixCraft This is Apple we're talking about.
@nixCraft this absolutely crushes the high-end Chromebook market.
@nixCraft i wouldn't say a 599 USD 8gb machine is killing anything
@nixCraft I'd still pick a refurb Thinkpad over this.
