I am working on my next wood panel painting. I've returned to the BC Ferry trip to Vancouver Island for inspiration. I'm about two hours into this project: one hour to pick the photo from my collection and one hour to get it added to my surface.

Ferry Photo - session 2 - roughly 3 hours work. I have outlined the main shapes with black acrylic. One it's thoroughly dry I will put a thin layer of priming in a dark blue or green. The piece will be a rather bright piece, lots of whites and light grays so a dark under coat will help the colours pop.

I primed my painting.

After a second coat of green and letting it sit to thoroughly dry, I started on the background. It's a foggy but bright day and I'm going to need a lot of Titanium white. I used the last of my white to mix the lightest colour of the fog. That layer will need to dry then I'll add a second before moving on to the most distant line of trees.

I have also ordered more Titanium white.

White paint found and jars for mixing colours found. So I've applied the second coat to the fog colour. I've laid down the first layers of the fog covered trees and what will be the non-foggy trees. The final trees (the warm area) will be much bluer on the next layer.

This is what it looks like now that the paint has dried. I'll add more layers tomorrow to the two newest ones.

I usually take weekends off from my big paintings but I wanted to get more layers down. It looks better now that it's nearly dry. I'll post an updated photo. This one is from right after I took a break.

It's been a while... I took a two week vacation from painting (U.S. thanksgiving plus husband taking time off from work).

I have many more layers of colour to add to the rooster photographer but I like what I accomplished in session 9. I'm about 11 hours into this piece.

I ended up taking most of December off from working on this piece. There were the holidays and I was waiting on my new pair of glasses.

I have my new glasses now and the holidays are over. I worked another hour or so on it. I'm about 12 or 13 hours into it now.

I worked again on Ferry Photo. The lighting in my work space (cough couch, living room) is way too yellow to do this piece justice. I'm painting it in a very cool colour scheme to capture the soft blues and greens of the Salish sea.

I'm about 14 hours into this piece.

The new lamp is a game changer. I worked another hour or so putting me at about 15 hours work.

I worked on the painting again, mostly on the hen's dress but also on the railing / barrier since her dress and the ship are similar colours.

I spent two hours working on this painting today. I focused mostly on the hen: her legs, arms, and dress. I am slowly glazing colours to bring in more details.

More typically I am a thick paint slap it all down sort of artist but this one requires — demands! — a different approach.

I am listening to the newest Enola Holmes mystery while I work.

After about 17 hours of work, here's where the painting is at. So many layers of subtle colours needed. Patience. Deep breaths. FOCUS.

My hand is still bruised and painful but I can hold a paintbrush without too much pain. So I worked another hour on this piece. Slowly slowly building up layers of colour and detail.

I'm about 18 hours into this piece.
