Huh… ICBC (the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia - BC's public auto-insurance corp) sent out an email explaining the rules and best practices for using a roundabout.

We're getting a new roundabout on an important intersection of Highway 4 in #PortAlberni. They're building it now at Hwy4 and Beaver Creek Road. Quite the project!

This is a handy primer/reminder on how to use roundabouts. Most people around here seem either clueless or terrified of them. lol

@chris
I saw that. I felt vindicated to read that you’re supposed to signal your exit from the roundabout. I’ve always done this but nobody else does!
@fname ya, i have known this rule for a long time but it seems others are blissfully and dangerously unaware lol

@chris
I was living in Australia when I first learned to drive, there you were supposed to signal toward the centre of the roundabout while you were travelling in it, then signal the other way when exiting.

Of course, we went around in the opposite direction—because of coriolis force.😉

@fname @chris Where in Australia? In the ACT we had to signal left on entering if travelling less than half way around the roundabout (ie turning left), or right if travelling more than half way around it (ie turning right). Can you tell the phrase "half way around the roundabout" is burned into my brain? Then signal left to exit "if practicable".

@chris "Before reaching your desired exit, signal right so that drivers waiting to enter and pedestrians waiting to cross know your intentions."

Thank you ICBC for pointing out the obvious that too many seem to ignore.

Also, respect the lane markings. The number of times I got into an almost collision because a person cut through a solid line in a roundabout can't be counted on my fingers and toes..

@EdwinG i cringe to think how many people will read this sentence and say “what pedestrians”? lol
@chris Just be thankful if they go through it the right way around when it first opens. I remember two new big ones opening in Abbotsford and that seemed to be an issue.
@michaelrussell Is it true that they tore out the roundabout by Highstreet Mall because people drove so badly in it?

@Canuckduff I doubt it because they left the one on the other side of Fraser that people have been driving poorly in for 20 years. Haven't seen someone go wrong way around it in a while though.

I'd heard it was removed at the request of Amazon who is putting a warehouse in down the street. I don't know but have noticed that light is a bit of a debacle when traffic gets busy. Trying to drive south on Mt. Lehman and be able to turn right on Fraser is damn near impossible sometimes.

@michaelrussell Yeah that whole area is crazy if you don't aren't already familiar!
@Canuckduff I live in Langley but started driving out there in the mid 90's to go to UCFV. It has seen a lot of changes! There has to be some better answer for that highstreet part though. The new condos in there aren't going to help matters.
@Canuckduff I just saw they are closing one of the 3 lanes on the Mt. Lehman overpass for the remainder of the year. 😅

@chris

Good to have. I've seen drivers ripping through the small roundabouts in Vancouver side streets: No signals, since they are small roundabouts. Speed (in a 30 km zone) into it to ensure "I got here first, so get out of my way". Of course, if everyone drives that way, entering with that mentality, well... 🚗💥🚗

@thegreenpagesBC @chris Then there's my friend who, if they were empty, liked to go around a couple times to achieve escape velocity.
@chris my favorite is the one they put in Edmonton a couple decades ago and had to put in traffic lights because no one could figure out how to use it. Thankfully at least on the island people seem to be getting used to them.
