Thanks to a @JetTip alert, I see Boeing's 777-9 ("777X") prototype N779XY has flight plans scheduled today as BOE003 to SeaTac #KSEA & Portland #KPDX. So far test flights haven't gone much to airline hubs. This may be a hint that testing is getting increasing simulation of airline service prior to FAA certification. I've been expecting we'll see them in Portland when some of the backlog of unpainted airframes in Everett come here for paint. This is a bonus early visit. #aviation #travel #avgeek
Boeing 777-9 prototype #3 N779XY departing Portland International Airport on a very brief touch-and-go visit this afternoon. Boeing test pilots flew this 777-9 prototype to Seattle-Tacoma #KSEA and Portland #KPDX today. I'm sure we'll see more soon as FAA certification progresses. #aviation #business #travel #avgeek #PNW
Video: Boeing 777-9 prototype #3 N779XY touch and go on Runway 10R at Portland International Airport #KPDX this afternoon. Welcome to Oregon! The Boeing test pilots did touch & go's at Seattle-Tacoma #KSEA and Portland #KPDX on today's test flight. The flight originated from Seattle Boeing Field #KBFI and later landed back there after touch & go's at MWH and PAE as well. #aviation #business #travel #avgeek #PNW
I expected we'd see more 777-9s in Portland eventually after the Boeing test pilots did a touch&go on #KPDX Runway 10R two weeks ago. Today N779XY was back again for a touch&go on Runway 10L. Photos taken from home: takeoff from PDX and climbout with sunlight enhancing the wing features including the folding wingtips. With wingtips extended, it's wider than a 747-8. The flight originated at Seattle Boeing Field #KBFI, Boeing's flight test base, and is now returning there. #aviation #avgeek #PNW
"Why does the Boeing 777x have folding wingtips?" by Aerospace Global News AGN - Boeing 777-9 & 777-8 wingtips catch attention because they fold up (similar to naval carrier jets) to reduce their wingspan to previous 777 span for airport taxiways and gates. But for flight, the wingtips extend and lock allowing more lift for greater range even though it's a bigger plane. It's expected to have highly competitive fuel efficiency per seat-mile. https://aerospaceglobalnews.com/news/why-does-the-boeing-777x-have-folding-wingtips/ #777X #aviation #travel #avgeek
Why does the Boeing 777x have folding wingtips?

The extended position enhances the aerodynamic efficiency during flight while the folded configuration maintains airport compatibility.
