Today I published my very last post on Instagram!

It took me some time to prepare this sad moment, but I am happy it's here now.

I shared @_elena great introduction video and wrote in the captions about how the Fediverse is such great place for creatives, artists, hobbyists, tinkerer, writer, art lovers, photographers, blogger, nerds and just everybody. And how one can find interesting people to talk to, original artworks, diverse communities and discover great music and journalism... and all this without annoying ads or stupid algorithms.

💪 I've even (hello non tech person here!) made a little website for my friends with some info and links to help them switch to the Fediverse.

@jill @_elena Well done. I only have Instagram left now that Twitter and Facebook have gone. As a photographer too many models just use Instagram for their messaging. I’ll get there eventually.

@rbphotographic I get that. It's crazy how many people trust their businesses just with one app. I remember when Instagram was down for quite some time a few years ago and everyone panicked and realised that it might be a good idea to not rely on a single app and might at least have their own webpage with contact information.

@jill may I ask you how did you "prepare" to leave? I left Facebook long time ago, but i'm having a hard time quitting Instagram - a kind of addiction maybe?
Mostly because i already know my friends or favourite local accounts will not join the Fediverse..

@aimee80 First I started looking for alternative ways to get information and updates e.g. from artists, galleries etc. and made a backup from my IG data. Then in turns, I cleaned up my bookmarks, posts and stories, while remembering good times and wonderful encounters.

At the same time I made myself familiar with the Fediverse and its possibilities, well and the mostly fun crowd here.

As mentioned, I also made a little site for my friends, which also took some time, since I am not used to this kind of tinkering.

Yes, like you said it can be an addiction and I get that it is hard as f... and there are so many good reasons to stay, but for me the reasons for leaving (as stated in Elena's video) outweigh those.

At the end it is an individual choice about what is more important to oneself in regards of integrity, ideals, good conscience, values and personal health.

Or in totally different words: Life is too short! 😁

@jill Thank you so much. I really need an example or some inspiration to get moving and leave that toxic environment behind. On second thought, it’s not so much an addiction as it is a bad habit. As you said, my moral values, integrity, and conscience are all telling me to leave. It’s time to become more active in the fediverse and act accordingly 😎
