Today is my first official #DIDay. I wanted to celebrate it by deleting my FB account, but I still need to do a proper backup, so this will have to wait.
But I want to join it anyway with the things I have done in the past month.
I opened an account on #Matrix and started chatting on #Element X with some friends.
I #Degoogled my phone, while waiting to buy a new #Fairphone with /e/OS (which will happen soon).
I joined @Tutanota and now I use it as main email.

1/3

I deleted all my photos and files on #Google, transferred my work projects on #Nextcloud and my pictures on #Filen.
I installed #Linux with #pop!_OS on my laptop. I am not an IT person and this has been the most challenging thing I have done so far.
I am starting to integrate alternative social media and communication systems for my customers.
But mostly, I talk about Digital Independence with friends, customers, acquaintances. I talk a lot. Some of them listen to me and try new things.

@gilraen79 Filen was new to me, thanks for the tip!
@avmakt it's really simple and doesn't have all the features in Nextcloud, but it's cheap and perfect for pictures! It doesn't work on my old Android phone, but it has an app for syncing that I can't wait to try 😊
@gilraen79 πŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺ Good job!! Do you like pop! _OS? I installed Mint and i love it, but also pop! was intriguing me! You have so many beautiful photos on Pixelfed!
@borgqueen I really don't need to do complicated stuff on my laptop, so I really like it, so far. It's easy to configure and I love the store, that helps a lot with installing and upgrading software. I'll probably try a new one on the other pc, so that I can properly see the difference with the others.
Thank you for the kind words on my pictures ❀️ I love taking them, and Pixelfed is perfect to share my hikings and travels 😊

Watching the news right now gives me the strength to keep going, learning new stuff, and keep talking.

@gilraen79 Welcome to the encrypted side!
@Tutanota thank you! Glad to be here 😊
Brava πŸ‘
@mpb grazie ❀️
@gilraen79 this is really impressive, what made you decide to invest time in this? I mean moving to Nextcloud for instance isn’t that easy, I think?
@TimothyRoes I decided to start using more EU software and slowly leaving all US companies. It's not easy and I struggle, sometimes, but Nextcloud, for example, is way better than Google Drive. I don't self host so I found a company that has this service and, so far, it's working really well 😊

@gilraen79 @TimothyRoes I have found Nextcloud to be a solid platform, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to have a solid self-hosted server.

I currently use SynologyDrive, and may be looking at other options soon, you willing to share where you are buying your hosting?

@Jeff @TimothyRoes I am currently with Tab-digital, but I know that The Good Cloud have a good service as well. It's working well so far, for my needs, which are really basic, but they offer solutions also for bigger projects and seem reliable.
@gilraen79 @Jeff I've also been happy with Nextcloud, only issue was with file names with special characters (allowed on macOS, but couldn't sync to Windows because they're not allowed there).
@TimothyRoes @Jeff I have solved the issue for files directly on Nextcloud, as there's the possibility to fix them there without having to change them all manually. That was life (and time) saving for me, as one of the pc I am using still uses Windows.
@gilraen79 @Jeff oh thanks, I’m going that check that out
@TimothyRoes @Jeff you can find this option on the Admin panel, under Basic Settings --> Sanitize filenames. This changed all the files that were not compatible with Windows and fixed all the errors :)

@TimothyRoes I still cringe when I see filenames with spaces, let alone '&' and ofther "specialchar".

I think when I have my other home server/network tasks finished I will take another look at Nextcloud.
