whim suggested i do a presentation on archival-quality storage options for physical media within poor fujo budgets and it's intriguing but how many people would actually be interested.... that seems like most ppl would think it's a boring topic lol. also if they care then they're probably already looking at guides. or is this an xkcd feldspar moment
ok since it seems like there's real interest in an archival storage presentation thanks to this year's #citruscon panels, i collected some thoughts on my dw so ppl are welcome to give suggestions for topics to cover if i didn't already list them: https://miscellanium.dreamwidth.org/25179.html
thoughts for a pre-recorded con panel: archival storage for your yaoi

i mentioned this idea on fedi but wanted to jot down an outline somewhere it'd be easier to format while still being open to public comment. if there's anything you think isn't already addressed here but would be helpful to see discussed pls lmk! there are no stupid questions, but i don't have the b

@angelfeast if someone can do a presentation on digital archiving, which is infinitely easier, then im positive there's an audience for this, especially considering there's always ppl showing off their doujin collections. just gotta sell it like "hey! want to make sure your yaoi books don't crumble into dust in 10 years? here's hiw to preserve them so they can be readable in 70 years"
@angelfeast šŸ™šŸ™šŸ™šŸ™šŸ™šŸ¤²šŸ¤²šŸ¤²šŸ¤²šŸ¤²šŸ¤² we yearn for such things
@angelfeast see but you bringing this up makes me realize... Hey I domt even have storage options more secure than cardboard boxes! I should go to this panel and learn how to up my game from a person before i do deep dives on guides!
@scumsuck i was giving it some more thought last night and i don't think i've really seen much aimed at individuals šŸ¤” at least not individuals that aren't grannies trying to save wedding dresses or stuff like that, and the stuff i have seen doesn't always have good advice (especially in the age of genai....)
@angelfeast @scumsuck itd be baller if u could share ur knowledge about preserving/archiving/protectively displaying paper works, acrylic pieces/expensive figures, and items that would be going into an itabag. i cringe when i see ppl put their expensive collections of pins and badges and charms against vinyl in their bags 😬 and im sure hardcore itabagers would love to know how not to ruin several hundo $$$ of merch
@whimwitch @angelfeast i am the cringe who is just sticking stuff in the provided itabag pocket without knowing youre supposed to put something else in there B) spread the knowledge!
@scumsuck @whimwitch if it makes you feel better, nobody is being encouraged to think of fashion accessories in the context of preservation since they were never meant for that lol. a side effect of disposable fandom culture? but that's a whole different topic...
@angelfeast @whimwitch there's also something abt knowing that it isnt meant to last? Like if I put a keychain on my backpack I know it's going to smack onto stuff, or the sticker make is on paper rather than vinyl so I know its going to melt in the rain. Still, would be interested to know about material interactions! I mostly just have stickers and buttons in my bag and haven't seen any deterioration yet

@scumsuck @angelfeast oh totally! there are some things i have where im okay with it being more temporary. i know in misc's case, they sometimes buy extras to have one for use and one for show :p. i just see a lot of itabaggers that look like they've got at least $200 worth of merch in there, and i get so worried about how some of them will feel if they leave their merch in the bag for a while (misc would have to share how long it takes for stuff to degrade based on material), and then their blmatsu treasures get stuck to the vinyl and unadhere from the acrylic :( or get super sun damaged if it's a bag they take out and about all the time for years

i don't really know how ppl treat their itabags, but i have known ppl in passing that have been very upset to find that the bag they left in the closet for like 5 years has eaten through their charms and stuff cause of the way they're packed in there and against the vinyl

@angelfeast
people would eat this up, i watched a panel from someone who collects vintage star trek fanzines just today and multiple people in chat also collected zines from the 60s-90s
@neckspike that's what got me thinking about it!

@angelfeast I love this idea!!! I had an archival studies concentration while I was in library school. I wish I took better notes because it was really cool learning all of the work that goes into preserving physical and digital materials

I was psyched about the digital fandom archiving panel, and I think a physical archiving panel will go a long way, esp. when it comes to zines/doujinshi!

@blakasmoko if it makes you feel any better about your notes i am doing continuing professional development every day i'm at work and i still can't remember shit about things like different types of photographic prints and negatives. it's a ton of information!!

wasn't expecting the digital preservation panel to get into physical media but i'm glad to see it! there were some suggestions on the slides and in the chat that i would Not advise tho lol

@angelfeast
That would be really cool!! I would love to sit in a how to physical archive panel
I'm actually dealing with an archive problem rn lol of trying to restore yellowed used manga I recently received.
It would be good to teach people how to NOT let their manga and doujins get really really gross before their time, so people who get it later don't have to perform black magic to get it back to a somewhat decent state
@xx_HoneyRoses_xx haha black magic is a good way to put it. conservation intimidates me - you need a chemistry degree to get into a lot of those programs! def easier to be proactive with caring for collections and then to do what you can to stabilize whatever problems you have.

@angelfeast
I'm not a professional, but I've found the toy collection community has a bunch of paper conservation hobbyists who restore toy manuals and posters in detailed videos using accessible equipment, so I've been watching and taking notes from them. The manga isn't rare and I got it really cheap, so I feel comfortable tinkering with it. Hopefully it ends well :VšŸ‘āœØ

But that's a lot for the average fan to do. Like you said, it's a lot easier to just take care of your stuff so it can stay nice and crisp as long as possible. And I think your presentation would help immensely. You might inspire other fans to get into the professional world of preservation and conversation too.
