#WritersCoffeeClub ~ How well did this short month go for you, in terms of writing?

#ScribesAndMakers ~ How did your month go?

  • #KonginiIdol is being uploaded EP by EP. It's all writing. So I've been a bit at loose ends, writing flash and working on two "new" novels.
  • "#Bijou the #TimeTravelingGhost," an Edgar Rice Burroughs X Jack Vance style pulp. I have mixed feelings about it. 20K is written. I need to do another polishing and adaptation pass for broader release. And I need #BetaReaders.
  • "#Airiusi: The Crow and the Witch." A Tanith Lee-style Mythpunk story. 5K written. The early release is getting favorable remarks. The main narrator is a #Crows, which is both fun and challenging to write.

@NaraMoore Bijou the Time-Traveling Ghost" and see how the pulp elements come together. What specific feedback are you hoping to get from beta readers?

1 For transparency: I engage in beta exchanges. I don’t pay for beta readers or editors. As a web author, money spent is money lost.

2 How does the pulp come together? I consider Bijou semi-pulp. It is flashier than my other work, with a focus on “wonders.” The surrealism is more overt, and the plot is more flamboyant. Though I am still trying to write more nuanced characters than is standard in the pulp tradition. The pieces and history researched. The stage is more culturally diverse. Meaning: I work to include non-Western cultures.

3 What am I looking for?

  • Where things lack clarity. (I don’t understand.)

  • Awkward transitions.

  • The character doing or saying something that will make readers like them less.

  • Blue screen scenes, i.e., lack of background setting, especially at the beginning of chapters or new scenes.

  • Of course, grammar and spelling. Though most of that has been dealt with.

  • Occasionally, where a scene could be omitted, or one added to flesh something out.

  • Anything else that might be noticed?

  • Goes without saying, politeness on both ends.
