@alloalli @heidilifeldman from being #British I know that sadly about 50% is enough. However, those that didn't vote are also to blame, as was the case in the UK. If like me you support democracy, it means that we have to respect the decision, and politely disagree when needed. But to repeat, Trump was the will of the American people twice, and if he is right three times. That is pretty consistent. Much like Brexit, then the Election which handed victory to Johnson.
@rodlux @heidilifeldman that's all truth, as long as the voting process is held in a democratic way. Sometimes you think an obligation to vote could help make the result more representative of the population, but people are not used to being told what to do anymore, so an obligation will be difficult to realise
@alloalli @heidilifeldman whether #Trump is good or bad for the #US is almost academic. The point is that society changed, and perhaps those of us more on the centre/left did not appear to address the needs of the population enough or indeed articulate a clear visition. Like or loath #Trump he is an electoral genius. The American people were also fully aware of his past including alleged links to #Epstein. They took an on balance decision.

I'll only make one observation. In the Brit system it doesn't need to be 50% to be enough. (A fair system would iae require 50+%) From memory, and I may be wrong, in Thatcher's 2nd victory she was elected with 39%, and more seats in pmt. than in victory 1 (42%).
The present govt achieved more than 60% (64%?) of seats with 36% of votes cast.
I've been battling against this all my adult life. For 50 years few listened.

@hoare_spitall @alloalli @heidilifeldman yes the #UK system is basically undemocratic. When you factor in the House of Lords, Privy council and Monarchy it begins to look a bit like #Iran in terms of structure. I really think that at the very least the UK should introduce compulsory voting. I am tired of hearing people complain that they didn't vote and are not represented...
@rodlux @alloalli @heidilifeldman While we still have the fptp system, I think compulsory voting would further alienate the disillusioned, and be seen as an unjustfied authoritarian limitation on individual rights.
I have my own method; if somebody gripes about the UK govt or other aspects of the system I ask if they've voted in recent elections. Answer 'no' then I tell them (politely) to shut up and stop whining if change isn't worth the effort.

I had a social evening one time with a retired judge, a lawyer, and a senior policeman, all German, way. It was General Election time in UK and our chat began when one of them said "What I've never understood about the UK system is . . ."
As I answered their questions I could see their eyes growing larger by the minute, and all eyebrows creeping upwards.
