@dtm I had a #criterion #cav #laserdisc copy of Lawrence of Arabia. I imagined at the time that it would be glorious on a setup with higher def as I had an Sony SD TV at the time.

I later bought a premium version of the movie on DVD, and saw it using a 1080p TV. Better, but I knew that it still had more to give in terms of detail.

I then saw this movie at the Cinerama Dome with a newly restored 70mm print, Yeah, the movie had a lot more to give. It was glorious. And epic. The mirage scene where Peter O'Toole and guide getting water shifting to watching Omar Sharif arrive is breathtaking on a large screen with a true 2:20 aspect ratio. And there are other moments like that as well.

The #thx movies being produced today mimic the level of detail, but movies today are rarely shot with the same sense of scale baked in.
