Everybody is (understandably) very excited that Anthropic isn't selling their AI for Hegseth to use to automate his war crimes. But I would gently suggest that we not accept setting the bar quite so low. https://www.anildash.com/2026/02/27/a-cookie-for-dario/

@anildash I bet you once they really are cut from a military contract they will run to fellatio the boot to get it back

@anildash

That's a thorough analysis, would take it even further: it's a good techbro vs bad techbro game right before massive white collar layoffs.

@anildash I mean, it has to start somewhere! 🤷‍♂️😏
@anildash thank you for calling this out so clearly & not mincing words, we need more high-profile people in tech (and elsewhere) to do the same
@anildash being just slightly less evil than the pack
@anildash OpenAI seems to have stepped in within hours.
@anildash I admire you a lot Anil, but I think failing to differentiate the different choices made by these companies is not beneficial to the public. I was hoping this would be an opportunity to educate folks about the differences.
@mathcolorstrees I’m not sure I understand the point you’re making. That I should have catalogued what every other company did?

@anildash Not at all, I am hoping to see a way for people to differentiate between options personally. If they have to use AI, which a lot of people are, is there one option that could be better than others. Or they might as well just go with the big baddies because it’s all the same.

I’m open to understanding if I’m missing a point here about our options. Or am I worrying unnecessarily? Or is it that you believe they are in fact all the same?

@anildash I know your piece was a critique and not what I’m asking for, and I’m not in a place to tell you to write something else.

Really I should write something myself but I’m exhausted by the discourse. I was looking to people I respect to give some practical advice. Something like, “hey they are not amazing, but here is a sign that there are differences and you should choose accordingly”

@anildash I don't understand why there is not more discussion that Hegseth basically wants to survey every American, but with the military.
While fully in agreement on the starting premise of your post, I'm not sure it's fair to call Anthropic a "we don't totally suck LLM company". This is a company which not only has stolen countless works to bootstrap itself, it continues to spam the world to maintain its lofty valuation. They do totally suck, even if they, in headlines at least, refuse to support war crimes.
