Explanation: Marshal Petain, a veteran of WW1, was placed into power by the French government during the Nazi invasion in WW2. He promptly surrendered to the Nazis and set up a fascist government in France, because Petain was not actually a supporter of the Third Republic or democracy. Just his idea of France - white, Catholic, and totalitarian.
After being removed from power by the Nazis near the end of the war and then surrendering when the Nazi regime collapsed, he tried to play at being some heroic inside resistance for France instead of the literal head of the collaborationist government who personally spearheaded numerous anti-democratic and antisemitic orders even without Nazi pressure.
He was sentenced to death and stripped of his honors. The court commuted his sentence to life imprisonment, and he died a few years later.
