@paulrickards oh my god. Flashbacks to TV guide magazines having something like this next to each program.
VCRPlus Controller Code Algorithm Explained

This original paper by Ken Shirriff, Curt Welch, and Andy Kinsman describes the algorithm used by the VCRPlus Controller.

@paulrickards oh wow VCR+ codes. that was ... that was quite a thing. wow.

@paulrickards why not just get a Macintosh TV? (Yes, I know why…)

@paulrickards Oh wow. I remember when my dad replaced our old RCA VCR with a Sony model in the mid-90s, and Mom was excited that we could use the VCR+ codes in the TV guide to record shows instead of having to manually put the time periods in (she’d occasionally make errors).

I haven't seen this app before, was it for the Macintosh TV? Or for a particular model of TV tuner card?

@smallsco Neither, I think it was just a utility someone made to encode/decode the VCR+ numbers for an actual VCR.

You can find it here:

@paulrickards I actually used this program!
@macinthrope Me too! Was so much easier than programming it manually.
@paulrickards @smallsco There's so much nostalgia jammed into one screenshot I can barely stand it

@paulrickards Combine this with Couch Fire on your #NewtonOS device and you’re golden.
