I had the fortunate circumstance of being in DC while the Smithsonian had the 25th anniversary of Star Trek exhibit on display. Part of that exhibit was a video of Nichelle relating how she got the part.

The producers had won some victory over Roddenberry; he mentioned he wanted to make a minor change to add some color to the command deck. they agreed not understanding what he was doing. They thought in the moment they were being generous.
