Today, EU lawmakers are gathering for the next round of formal negotiations on the controversial #CSARegulation.

🔎 While some of the most controversial issues, like those relating to mass scanning, will come later, we are paying a lot of attention to things that could be discussed soon, especially the rules on #AgeVerification.

With final negotiations on the controversial CSA Regulation underway, you’d be forgiven for thinking that our digital rights are out of the woods.

2/3 On #AgeVerification, the position of EU member states is to have rules which would force most or all private message services to check people's ID documents before being able to use them.

🚫 This would not keep anyone safe, but could have serious negative consequences on everyone's free expression and right to private communications.

The Parliament needs to prioritise making sure that the final text on the #CSARegulation safeguards uses of age verification and doesn't make them mandatory.

3/3 🕵🏽 In parallel, the Parliament are also preparing their position on the short-term version of the CSA Regulation, aka the 'interim ePrivacy derogation'.

✊🏽 We, together with 39 organisations and several individual experts, called on MEPs to fully rule out unlawful mass surveillance in this law, to protect the right to private communications across the EU from unwarranted #BigTech snooping ➡️ https://edri.org/our-work/open-letter-we-say-no-to-big-tech-mass-snooping-on-our-messages/
