The German film festival #Berlinale is abolishing itself. After this year's jury president #WimWenders claimed films should not be political (and importantly not criticise #Israel or call out #genocide), the German gov now wants to fire festival director #TriciaTuttle.

Because award-winner Abdallah #Alkhatib has criticised #Germany & "abused" his speech for "political destruction" (whatever that is).

Wegen israelfeindlicher Auftritte: Weimer will offenbar Berlinale-Chefin absetzen

Der Streit über den Nahostkonflikt hat die Berlinale auch in diesem Jahr überschattet. Nun drohen Festivalchefin Tricia Tuttle wohl Konsequenzen.

I mean what the fuck. If art is not allowed to be political and the government censors it for being critical of its politics, what the heck is the difference between the Federal Republic's and the "Democratic" Republic of Germany's approach to art?!

@ilumium

Not even careful maneuvering will save your job. Silence the Palestinians – or resign.

@ilumium Have you seen Alkhatibs performance? I found it insulting, disturbing and totally inappropriate.

What I do not understand is in how far Tricia Tuttle should be held responsible. Should she have jumped up the stage and shut him up? The selection of the movie seems to be beyond doubt.

@Labonitamascota
My full solidarity goes to Tricia Tuttle. She was targeted by pro-palestine groups the whole time, got that "open letter" from artists and actors like BDS - Tilda Swinton, she defended Wim Wenders and the jury in a very consoling way. She held a wonderful and very inclusive speech at Teddy Awards and invited the producer of A Letter To David and trophy winner of last year again to show his documentary a second time - it was extended because his brother who was one of the hostages got released. AND she is on a photo with Palestinian flags. In such polarised times it seems whatever you do is not enough or wrong.

Edit: I corrected the film title, sorry for confusion.
@ilumium

@jhaens @ilumium And Wolfram Weimer is a disgrace.
@Labonitamascota
Oh yes - he is now the one who ruins the image of the Berlinale from the other side of the spectrum- as a festival where art is not free anymore.
@ilumium
@jhaens @Labonitamascota @ilumium I am of the opinion that this is a very specific problem we people on the left have. While the nazis never seem to have a problem to rally behind some common hate, we tend to disintegrate into splinter groups that hate each other more than they detest the nazis.
