Was one of those nights last night. 5 hours of shooting. Hard drives are full. Left knee is killing me.

Totally worth it.

Arctic style disco lights, and the moon turned into a star.

Captured with the TT Artisan 14mm F2.8. Very compact little lens. Plenty of optical blemishes, but at this price who cares. Fun and compact. Good companion for the Lumix S9.

Here's a little "behind the scenes" from the other night. I needed one or two pictures of myself to help promote the workshop. It's so weird posing for a camera, I do my best work behind the lens instead of in front of it :)

@ewen lovely shot, must have been a beautiful night!
@imrehg

Was a lot prettier when I wasn't standing in the shot :)

How it started, and how it finished! This is the same scene off the same camera, and captured with the same settings. The only thing changed is the moon and the aurora's mood. Cameras only see lig...

@ewen really cool shots! I definitely couldn't get my Aurora this pretty! Probably not using the right lens, old school camera too long exposure, and really bad at setting the focus :) But it is something...

Silly willy question, how does one set the focus right, when it is so damn dark? (and I wear glasses so it is rough on a good day as well)

@imrehg

Focus is easier on the mirrorless cameras :) They give you focus peaking so you manually roll through the range and when you see the stars get a little buzz from the peaking, you know they're sharp.

But sometimes you want the scenery to be sharp instead of the stars. Just takes practice. I also shoot very very wide, with 14mm. Your photo looked like maybe a 24mm with the crop sensor, so really closer to 36mm. You get more latitude with the wider perspective.

What I used to do when I had the Canon 5D was take a series of shots, and slightly nudge my lens focus each time. Then step back through the shots and look to see if the stars get puffy, or get tighter. Puffy means you're stepping away from focus. It was tricky.

Having a nice manual focus lens helps. That 14mm F2.8 by TT Artisan for example is very affordable, and very lovely.
