Interesting. #Microsoft just forced #BSidesSEA to enforce ID verification with tickets 3 days before the event.

Refunds are available if you believe this could affect you by the fash or just bullshit.

#BSides

@badsamurai what's Microsoft 's connection, is it hosted there?
@webhat correct. It’s been (TBH) graciously hosted on Microsoft campus for a long time. Free parking. Easy transit. Accessible and nice building.

@badsamurai @webhat this ID requirement while new, it seems to be universal, as we had it in November at their Zürich office as well for a #KustoCon event.

I guess their their threat model has been updated recently.

@badsamurai @webhat in that case (hosted on Microsoft campus), the ID verification sounds reasonable.
@badsamurai I would caution anyone "politically exposed" that Eventbrite's founders are very deeply linked to Thiel and Palantir. And there is a significant likelihood they are 'volunteering' data to Palantir and the regime.
@badsamurai @rootwyrm OH JESUS CHRIST can’t I have anything nice?
@project1enigma @badsamurai it's literally been out in the open for years upon years. Kevin Hartz was a partner at Thiel's VC firm for several years. Thiel was a major investor in Eventbrite, as well as prior companies. He's publicly said he's a huge fan and still friends in multiple interviews going back years.

@rootwyrm @badsamurai

Not everyone knows every news from years ago. I considered boosting your post but as it is, readers can't be expected to know everything in my eyes, so.

always use a burner email.

good fake names to use include mark chapman and john barnes

@badsamurai I would flag that just because someone thinks they scrubbed the data does not mean they have. If you don't own the hardware, there is no way to know.

In other words, good faith on the host is not enough.

@badsamurai from the replies I think people are jumping to the wrong conclusion - back when I hosted NoVA Hackers at SRA Inc (now CSRA) because there was a SCIF in the bulding and we had reporting requirements to the Fed we had to get a list of names ahead of time so our Field Security Officer could run that list of names against a list of people not allowed to be in buildings with classified data processing for the federal government, and then check IDs when folks showed up.

What I'm reading from your screenshot is the Microsoft building is saying "Hey, we need to check IDs" not Eventbrite? This sounds a lot like there might be a SCIF somewhere in that building, and this is just a reporting requirement to the Fed (that existed before this administration).

@xabean Doubtful on the SCIF. Building 92 was, up until 2 weeks ago, the publicly accessible Visitor Center for 15 years. But it was recently closed. Unknown why.

I think those outside the area don’t know the context that this is unprecedented and not a thing at the sibling BSidesPDX. The talks are TLP:Clear. Microsoft has fiercely shutdown the Pro-Palestine protestors. And we’re living in a country fearful of ICE kidnappings, big tech’s alliance to the Trump Admin, and poor federal and Washington State data privacy regulations.

Why is Microsoft asking @bsidesseattle to store ID information in eventbrite for up to 120 days? That’s a lot of PII to unnecessarily hold onto. They already have the PCI details of the credit card purchase.

This year’s theme was supposed to be “community building.”

@badsamurai @xabean For clarity, the 120 days is an Eventbrite item ( in case of post event expenses, etc).
