HEY CANADIANS

Looks like Canada is going to shut down over-the-air VHF Weatheradio in March? Here's deets:

https://radio-hobbyist.com/the-end-of-an-era-environment-canada-to-silence-weatheradio-vhf-network-in-2026/

If you want to let people know you don't like that here's where:

I know this doesn't affect that many people but they gave like no warning so I guess now's the time to say something if you care.

@moira Does this mean marine VHF weather broadcasts will end? There's parts of Lake Ontario (one of the narrower of the Great Lakes) where you cannot get a cell signal. And if you can't get an offshore cell signal there, you sure won't on Lake Huron and Superior and probably Lake Michigan too. That's not cool or safe, if the marine VHF weather broadcasts are ending....
@alexblock I don't know enough to answer that. I hope not, I hope that's separate, but I don't know.
@alexblock @moira Marine weather broadcasts should continue on channel 83B (for the inland great lakes waters) as usual, per my reading of what is going on.

@moira This is crazy stupid.

There are soooOOooo many places without cellular service that will not have reliable alerting and weather information now.

Did they consult literally anyone outside of a big city? 🤦

Feedback submitted!

@javensbukan Tell others, too. I'm a city girl, this doesn't affect me, but I know it affects others.
@javensbukan I’m in the outer corner of the GTA (Toronto) , and I’m lucky when I’ve got one bar on my cellphone. I can only imagine how useless a cell signal would be on any of the waterways here.

@CAWguy Even in a tiny densely populated (by Canada standards) province like mine there are fairly large areas without any coverage, much of it where people have cottages or live year round.

The map shows the new towers being installed, but you can view the existing coverage area in the layers.

This empty area is where a federal park is (and some villages) - yet there is basically no cell service.

@CAWguy There is also a large swath of Cape Breton with largely nothing.
@moira this doesn't affect that many people....until there's an emergency and the cell network is down or degraded and the app fails to notify, or the power grid is down and you can't charge your phone.
@raptor85 Reminds me of this post from a while back:
@moira There's already next to no shortwave left in Canada. This is the last little bit, I guess.
@moira Thank you so much!
I actually use this a lot, 162.55 mostly. I would've missed that news.
