@consumablejoy DO EEEEEEEEEET! Honestly, a small notebook and a nice pen will get you SO far.
I love the Talens Art notebooks and they're like $10 with really nice paper. A decent fountain pen is maybe... $30? (you can go cheaper but ime that tends towards leakage issues). Or I have also loved drawing with the Sakura Pigma Graphic 1 which are like $5
