Looks like many people may be fleeing 1Password soon, so I thought it’s time I share this blog post from 2021 again:

Moving from 1Password to iCloud Keychain

Here's how to easily move your passwords from 1Password to iCloud Keychain

Simon B. Støvring
@simonbs Having made the move to iCloud when you first wrote this… I wonder how many people will be planning moving from iCloud to Bitwarden or similar?
@codingpanic I switched to Bitwarden a while ago and then one morning couldn't log in to the account for half a day because their server was down for maintenence so I promptly left. Who makes a password manager server dependent all the time! @simonbs
@simonbs And the good news it has gotten much better since then
@simonbs even more important now that I‘ve discovered I can use it for the OTPs (replacing MS Authenticator)

@simonbs I switched to StrongBox which seems to work well and cross platform with keepass. I guess eventually may to iCloud passwords if it can match existing features like ssh agent.

I might have some balance from old 1Password gift card. Got to check if it’s still available.

@simonbs bookmarked back then already, now reading it again..
@simonbs Fleeing because of the price increase?
@simonbs Interesting. It’s a large increase in terms of percentage, but still a pretty low cost, considering the value.

@simonbs first, did I miss something? What did 1Password do?

Second, while I love iCloud and have an iPhone and a Mac, I’m not quite sure how much we should be trusting Apple these days 😅

@ianthetechie They’re increasing the price.
@simonbs oh. Okay. I mean, I guess they haven’t changed their prices in over 10 years 🤷 I thought they were gonna fire all their engineeers and vibe code crap, or they had some massive breach they exposed they weren’t actually encrypting creds or something. Sure paying more isn’t fun but that’s a rounding error in the amount we pay for other things every year.
@ianthetechie you’re not wrong about the principle of it. But 30% increase is not a rounding error. I’m also not a fan that they started focusing on enterprise customers and leaving retail customers behind but then suddenly they want more money from their retail customers.
@simonbs Did I miss something, did 1Password do something bad?
@icorn They’re increasing the price.
@simonbs Have you evolved your strategy for storing non-website passwords and software licenses since you wrote this? The encrypted Apple Notes approach is fine, but would love something more robust!
@willcroft Yep, Passwords now support some of this.
@simonbs super insight. Don’t know if anyone does this but do people separate the 2FA and passwords in different password managers? Not to put all eggs in the same basket sort of situation?
Also where do people store the password recovery? Storing them in the same place defeats the purpose.
