"Updating", huh? What a word choice. I wonder in which direction it's updating!
@marcoarment Can't spell "updating" without "up"
@marcoarment I recommend Bitwarden, and you can host your own using Vaultwarden.
@scottag @marcoarment I just learned about Vaultwarden this afternoon (guess why!). Does it look like a good idea to run on a local Raspberry Pi 5 (running NextCloud)?
@marcoarment Using this to finally move over to Apple Passwords. Once the advertising on F1 cars started, I had a feeling trouble was ahead.
@buck @marcoarment you mean the Apple that pushes F1 movie ads to your wallet?

@danieldk @buck @marcoarment really don’t like the ad path they’re going down. Their interfaces were so clean not long ago.

Don’t need F1 The Movie clutter when checking sports scores.

@marcoarment up, and whilst not a huge for a year, it's not something I can say I support - as it seems to be only targeting their family plans (we didn't get an email for our team account for @bloominbeads)

They're VC funded now, not some tiny indie dev anymore. Honestly, I'm disappointed, plus the 'AI naming' thing.

@jsbilsbrough @marcoarment @bloominbeads Time to find an exit. It starts there and the goes to everything. VC funding. The end of fun

@marcoarment you're getting free updates!

To your cost...

@marcoarment A price increase of almost 40% is a hefty “update”. In the German version of that email they used “we are changing the costs of your subscription”.
@abdelkader_boui @marcoarment it should’ve been „we are altering the deal, pray we don’t alter it any further”.
@spitfire @abdelkader_boui @marcoarment
“This deal’s getting worse all the tiiiiime!”
— Lando Calrissian
@Beltliner403 @abdelkader_boui @marcoarment or - 1Password customer. Thankfully I've migrated over to Apple Passwords (and to Keepass as a backup) long time ago. The quality of software and customer focus is not there anymore.
@marcoarment ha! That’s even worse than the non-ownership version of “the price is changing”
@rjj @marcoarment yeah, it decided to change itself all by itself. And coincidentally it was an increase.
@marcoarment gotta get the money to advertise in F1 from somewhere.
@marcoarment People are reporting a 20% increase. Seems dumb.
@rickscully @marcoarment It’s 33% for the individual plan (in the US)
$36 -> $48 / year
@odin @marcoarment WOW! If Apple's introduction of their free password manager didn't kill 1Password, this likely will.

@rickscully @marcoarment To be honest, this prompted me to look at some other options and Apple Passwords simply wouldn’t work for me. No option for storing credit cards, software licenses, or notes, and no system for tagging or grouping items make it a non-starter.

That said, I’m sure it’s a great option for most people that just need to save a few passwords

@odin @marcoarment Sorry it doesn't work for you, but I would wager that most people aren't using 1Password's deeper features as a power user like you does -- but that is true of most hardware and software.

Personally, I like how easily Apple Passwords integrates with my authenticator app, and I am hoping more features are on the horizon!

@odin @rickscully @marcoarment Bitwarden is a thing. And their free plan is enough for most
@davidbcohen @rickscully @marcoarment My 1Password plan doesn’t renew until this fall, so I plan to look at other options before then
@marcoarment 34%, they missed the chance to call it a major update 😄
@marcoarment next level 🤣🤣🤣
@marcoarment You’re lucky.
Bitwarden increased the price by 100%!
From 10 to 20.
A year.

@pax0707 @marcoarment their language was even more passive, the email I received simply had the subject "Your Bitwarden Premium renewal is updating", so I almost didn't notice the price increase... the second sentence was "The price is updating to $1.65/month, billed annually". Though it added that "As an existing Bitwarden customer, you will receive a one-time 25% loyalty discount for this year's renewal".

$20/yr seems a bit steep just for U2F key support. $10/yr felt worth it.

@axby @pax0707 @marcoarment If you only use Bitwarden for that feature, yes, that seems like a steep price hike *. A big notepad is cheap, and it might serve you better if you have no interrest in the more advanced bells and features you get with a basic subscription.
Or you could use Keepass or Lastpass. They’d probably pay people to sign up these days.

*I ,apart from using it, have no affiliation with Bitwarden in any way.

@Izng @pax0707 @marcoarment I forgot about emergency and shared access, I do appreciate those somewhat. But I’d rather store my TOTP secrets separately (I actually use Keepass for that). Are there any other great premium features I’m missing?

Hmm and it looks like U2F key support is included in the free version now, I don’t think it was 2 years ago.

I don’t want to cancel because Bitwarden has been great and I want it to survive, but it seems like the free version would meet all my needs.

@axby @pax0707 @marcoarment My fav feature is the ability to on the generate “masked email addresses” using Fastmails api. Much like on iCloud, but on better mail servers.

@Izng @pax0707 @marcoarment ah, I guess I've never even looked into that because I pay for a domain name (slightly cheaper than Bitwarden premium after the price "update"), so I can get anything@{my domain} forwarded to my main email inbox.

It is fun to sign up for services using {service name}@{my domain name} as the email, though it can get awkward when dealing with a real person who wants to confirm your email address.

I have yet to catch any spam from these aliases, though.

@Izng @axby @marcoarment was being a bit sarcastic there. 10, or even 20$, a year is nothing compared to the competition, especially since you get everything most users need in a free version anyways.
@Izng @axby @pax0707 @marcoarment Lastpass no where comes near 1Password. At my current client we use LP and privately I have 1P.

@pax0707 @marcoarment the cheapest 1password subscription is EUR 33 a year.

For a ridiculously small amount of storage space. I don’t understand why password managers are so expensive.

@marcoarment Also..look at all the things you probably don’t use that we want you to pay for. But things like making the app open reliably? Naaaah.
@marcoarment Time to start paying the sweet, sweet VCs. <long digital sigh>
@marcoarment
Today on technofeudalism…
@marcoarment I implore you to use this language if you ever feel the need to discount Overcast.
@marcoarment if you decide you can make the switch to Apple passwords (I did last year and it works work on windows/iCloud if that’s a concern)
I found there is some massaging required in the export process to have a clean mostly lossless import. IIRC mostly around quoting and escaping fields in CSV and column names

@idcrook @marcoarment

Exporting a csv misses passkeys. CXP/CXF doesn’t:
https://1password.com/blog/fido-alliance-import-export-passkeys-draft-specs

And now available in 1Password (and Apple Passwords) on iOS: https://support.1password.com/export/?ios

Still not lossless (because Apple doesn’t store everything 1Password does) but your passkeys are now exportable either way (to or from 1Password).

Coming soon: Securely import and export passkeys | 1Password

You should be able to move your passkeys between different password managers. Learn about a draft set of specifications that will soon make that a reality.

@marcoarment I'm old enough to remember when 1Password prided themselves on being local-only and not a subscription service... Oh have times (VC money) have changed.
@marcoarment I left a while ago when I realized the standalone versions were not receiving the same attention.
@marcoarment “We are updating the chocolate ration to 25 grams. Praise Big Brother!”
@marcoarment updating that must be good news !
@marcoarment If only 1Password had heard about the economy of scale instead of AI.
@marcoarment this is the sign I’ve been waiting for to go all in on Apple Passwords. I’m actually kinda glad. 1Password made it a really easy decision.
@marcoarment A $12/year increase from $45 to $57 (before 15% sales tax). That’s a small 26% increase (if my maths is correct)
@marcoarment just got this today too. lol.
@globex @marcoarment so, they're reducing prices 😈
@globex @marcoarment “significant added AI value” 😂
@globex @marcoarment Wow, they even said the quiet part out loud. Hat's off to you Google, keep on not being evil!
@marcoarment The direction should be obvious. Otherwise they would have used “Downgrading” :-)
@marcoarment Too bad this wasn't a point release....
