Most laypeople don't know about the harms of proprietary technology and the existence of ethical alternatives to them, so it's our mission, as free software and digital privacy people, to tell them that there are better alternatives to the hostile closed-box tech and be willing to help them whenever possible. Even if most don't hear us, it's the right thing to do if we want to build a better future for the society.
