So they're rebooting the X-files. I loved the original, so I wish them well, but I wonder how you remake a show like that amid this cultural moment we're in?

How do you do a show about a pair of underdog FBI agents investigating a sinister conspiracy by the government when the people in charge of the government now believe in even crazier conspiracies than the show ever explored?

@MLE_online They could subvert the original and have the FBI staffed by raving loons except for these two finding the reasonable explanations for everything. “They sent us to look for something called ‘the knife alien’, but instead we found a suspect with strong motive and a knife covered in blood. Hmm.”

There’s also plenty of traditional horror stuff available. Census worker disappears in a small town, they’re sent to investigate, and they run afoul of the violent cult. Early X-Files had a lot of creepy-but-not-aliens stories before the multi-season story got going.

@bob_zim I like that idea. It still needs to have a conspiracy of some kind though

@MLE_online I was mostly imagining Strangelove. Would be really hard to keep that up as anything other than a comedy. The small-town cult thing is a more serious possibility.

They could do something like The Outsider.

Take it a little too far and you end up in Fringe territory, though.

@MLE_online The FBI agents are sent to a small town in Colorado called Patience. The town doctor’s death has been reclassified as a murder, and the sheriff found a possible connection to organized crime in New York. The see a child running in fear from the new town doctor, screaming he’s an alien. Linda Hamilton is there.
