Any idea how reputable Gandi is? They have worked well for me for a long time but I have no idea about the management. They were recommended years ago when I wanted to dump Network Solutions for various reasons.

@w_b My recollection is I have heard them mentioned only positively, but I have not specifically investigated.

@w_b @alice @Fpccraig My understanding is that they used to be reputable, but have been bought out and hollowed out. I was a Gandi customer, but the kept jacking prices on me.

I switched to Porkbun, which are far from ideal, but at least seem to be an improvement over Gandi at the moment.

I'll keep this in mind when it's time to renew. Thanks!

@w_b @alice @Fpccraig extremely fucking not. Do NOT use Gandi. It has long since been acquired by vulture capital and has become increasingly shitty both in quality and ethics as a direct result of those sales. Prices are going skyrocketing every year with quality and honesty going off a cliff.

The Register

@w_b @alice @Fpccraig if you are looking for a non-US company, I can and do recommend INWX.ch (available in English.) I'm not a huge fan of the new site, but their service and support has been top notch. When I was having issues with AXFRs, they didn't hesitate to escalate to engineering, confirmed a documentation problem, and got it fixed quickly.

Netcup is also a good option, though they're more focused on VPS than registrar. However, they have more US exposure potentially.

Fortunately, I only have DNS/dnssec with them. Price has gone up but isn't much more than non-intro price at inwx.

I use Migadu for my mail hosting. I am considering a move there to get 2fa. I'm open to suggestions here.

@w_b @alice @Fpccraig They were stable, until they were sold / got bought and "flipped" by a PE company:

"On 28 February 2019, Gandi CEO Stephan Ramoin announced that private equity firm Montefiore Investment had acquired the company.

In February 2023, Gandi was acquired by Total Webhosting Solutions, forming a new brand, Your.Online. In June, the company announced drastic price increases, including a new monthly fee for mailboxes previously included for free."

Thank you for the status report on Gandi

@w_b For context, I am one of the many customers that ran away from them after a decade+ of being a happy customer, so it was more than "Oh, LMGTFY". Quoting the snippet of Wikipedia was the quickest way to summarize "why?"

Carry on :)

@w_b @alice @Fpccraig been using their services for years. Their slogan is “no bullshit” isn’t it? Haven’t had a lick of trouble with them in the time I’ve used them, likely a decade.
