“The Phantom of the Moulin Rouge” (1925) was believed to be lost and since director René Clair didn’t like the film in the first place it looked likely to stay that way. By the late 1970s a surviving print with color tinting was discovered, restored and began making the rounds at rep houses, museums and universities.

In the tradition of early French Trick films by Georges Méliès, René Clair & Co. utilized camera tricks like “Pepper’s Ghost”, painted effects directly onto film stock and even the layering of film stock.
