Sometimes Charles manages to get his collar in a state where he looks like a supervillain.

(He has to wear the collar to avoid overgrooming his tummy.)

For anyone that’s worried Charlie is angry, he just kinda has resting angry face at some angles. He’s been wearing the collar for months and doesn’t mind it. He even uses it as a sleep aid sometimes (either as a pillow or to block light).

We’re still trying different options with the vet, but so far this has been the most reliable way to prevent him from licking a hole in his tummy.

@juliepagano he is a beautiful lily pad and I love him

@juliepagano

If nothing else, the top right image demonstrates how it will keep the heat in while he's sleeping. 3:O)>

@juliepagano

Charging the "I am not amused" lasers, focused into a planet killing beam.

@juliepagano Charles...does not appear very impressed about his current situation.
@juliepagano I feel like you might be in danger if that expression is anything to go by.
@raederle He just kinda has resting angry face.
@juliepagano or a flower. 🌻 🀣

First blooming flower cat of the year, Spring is coming !

@juliepagano What do you mean, "looks like"?

I, for one, welcome out new floral-feline overlord.

@juliepagano @cstross it looks even better on Charles than it did on Sir Francis Drake (who, I assume, also had a tendency to over-groom).

@juliepagano

Very stylish; the neck ruff suits you, sir.

@juliepagano

Looks like a peyote costume!

@juliepagano My cat also has a belly grooming problem. It never occurred to me to put a collar on her. Your collar is interesting because it looks inflatable. It looks less annoying than the regular cone of shame plastic kind. Does it have a name you could Google?

@nosrednayduj He grooms to the point of injury, so we have to take steps to prevent it, so he doesn't seriously hurt himself.

He tolerated the inflatable ones we tried, but kept putting holes in them so they deflated. We tried a recovery suit for a while, but then had a terrible situation where the butt flap got misaligned.

These are fabric with filling in them (sorta like a stuffed animal). We stack two of them (one medium and one large -- he's a big cat) to make it less flexible because he was occasionally able to work around just one of them. He tolerates these best out of everything we've tried, and he can generally enjoy his normal cat life with them. We try to give him a couple breaks every day where he gets supervised, no-collar grooming time.

It's not from a brand I particularly trust, which I don't love, but it’s the only thing we could find that worked well for him. Here's a chewy link.
