Explosion proof #telephone from #Plessey #England you would have used it if you were in the yard filling up 200 litre drums with #petrol or any other substance where there was #flammable #vapour or #gas - a normal telephone set would not be safe as it could make sparks (especially during loop disconnect dialling).
@vfrmedia As a student, I worked part-time for a company in Essen that manufactured explosion-proof telephone and signalling systems for mining. But that was many decades ago.

@kaievans in somewhere like a refinery/distribution centre, to let someone know they were ready for collection - or maybe there has been a leak or some other incident, and you dont' want to make a spark when alerting on site security/incident response (usually extension number 22 on the kind of PABX system that phone was connected to)
