Popped to Manchester to help with some orchard maintenance.

This is genius.

I'll never use staples again.

@smbsy that's a wonderfully simple and elegant solution. I'll have to remember that next time I'm adding tree cages.
@smbsy oh this could be a game-changer for our chicken run
@smbsy @LibertyForward1 that’s brilliant! Seems ever simpler (though possibly a little less versatile) than these connectors I was looking at: https://onemanfencing.com/

@josh0 @LibertyForward1 That's some fancy hardware :)
@smbsy @LibertyForward1 it’s definitely intriguing, especially if you’re using t-posts, but does seem a bit much for wooden posts, especially now!
@josh0 @smbsy @LibertyForward1 Looks like its for large animal fencing. Pretty heavy duty.
@EdBruce @smbsy @LibertyForward1 yeah, I’m worried about horses, mule deer, elk, and the occasional wandering cattle messing with my fences…
@smbsy Love the idea - doesn't it get terribly expensive on a larger scale though?

@richlv This is for a community orchard where the tree cages come off once a year for maintenance.

If it was a fence or a permanent fixture, then staples would be cheaper, yes.

@richlv Depends on where you live. If you’re in Switzerland, prepare for paying a buck a nut, or for a trip to France to pay ten times less.
@smbsy
@smbsy why do I see this *after* going to B&Q?
Also, What's the English word for those?
@ehproque Oh no! It's a wingnut.

@smbsy

Smart ☝️😊💡

@smbsy

Literally sitting here with my mouth open.

(In part because it means someone else does that "wander round the hardware shop wondering what I can repurpose" thing :) . Always nice to pass by a kindred spirit.)

@smbsy Must have been a mofo to tighten like that.
@vonxylofon Impact driver ;)
@smbsy I was being facetious about it being a wingnut. 😉
@smbsy this is a fantastic hack
@smbsy I'll never mash my thumb into the fencepost with a hammer again!
@smbsy I submitted that bodge to some orchard peeps in London, I'll let you know what the reaction is.

@smbsy
Reaction:

"Clever, 👍 but very expensive if you want to do 200 tree guards 💰"

@brunogirin Yes. The community orchard I visited in Manchester only has fifteen trees, so their priorities are little different.
