In May 2025, we held the LibrePlanet and LibreLocal events in Iran, in Shiraz, for the first time.

This two-day event was an opportunity for free software supporters, developers, and activists to gather.

Our goal was to discuss the history of the FSF and LibrePlanet, the importance of software freedom, and how to contribute to and promote this movement in local communities. All volunteers and speakers were welcome to participate in this event.

This was the first gathering of its kind in Iran, during which Greg Farough from the FSF staff gave a talk introducing the Foundation and the LibrePlanet community, which was recorded and published on the FSF's PeerTube channel.

Following the positive feedback from this event, we decided to increase our outreach about what LibreLocal is in the new year (2026), so that this could happen in different cities across Iran.

These plans were made in early 2025, before the protest events and the recent tragic incidents in the country. Unfortunately, the current societal situation in Iran is such that we cannot be sure if we will be able to hold these events on the new dates we have set.

Besides this, we had planned various other events, projects, and conferences that we were forced to cancel. Among these was a conference for a group reading of the Persian book "Ada Zangeman." This book, chosen by a community member, was to be read and discussed in a collective session.

We hope that the country's situation stabilizes soon so that we can carry out effective activities to promote free software in Iran. The community of free software activists in Iran (LibrePlanet Iran) remains committed to its goals of promoting the philosophy of free software, educating users, supporting Iranian developers, and producing educational content, and will pursue its plans as soon as conditions allow.
