I succumbed.

I wish I had a long time ago, winding hanks into balls manually was a massive pain in the bum.

This is *much* better, and the result cake is just 😘

Side note: I don’t get why yarn is sold in hanks. Completely pointless. More compact to store perhaps?

Nah. Pointless.

@Sobtanian I'm still fighting it. I don't want to own a yarn winder. And that's why I don't buy yarn in hanks, unless it will be wound for me (my LYS does it).

However, in December I bought 6 hanks of a very special wool from a local sheep farm. I still need to wind them. Hopefully the nice people in the LYS do it. I'm willing to pay a fee.

And I totally agree: why do hanks even exist?

@spinni81 hanks suck!

Trust me, grab the cheapest swift and winder you can find and get it, it’s so satisfying and very useful.

I’m thinking of even winding any skeins I have to make them into these cakes, I find cakes work perfectly with my faux Wool Jeanie, they’re buttery smooth in motion.

@Sobtanian I reallly don't want to buy one, no matter how cheap. It's one of those things I would use two times a year at most and I hate having rarely used stuff like that laying around. I'll either have the yarn shop wind my hanks or find someone who would lent me their winder. I'm not in a hurry, I have 5 WIPs :D

@spinni81 Fair enough. I have to recruit my wife and she hates the process!

I'm a monogamous knitter and crocheter, I at most have one knit and one crochet at any one time. I get obsessed and can't start anything else until the current WIP is finished.

@Sobtanian I wish I could work like that. But I get bored or people come and ask me to knit or crochet something. And I often say yes because it's for family (like, toddler nephew needs a warm hat, how could I say no!) or because I'm intrigued by the project.

Anyway, this year I want to finish all my WIP and I won't buy yarn until I have used everything I already have for WIPs or planned projects.

@spinni81 I found out last year from @consumablejoy’s #finishorfrogalong that us monogamous knitters are a very rare breed, as most people are like you.

I tried once to have 3 things going at the same time and I couldn’t cope 😅

I’ll accept one knitting and one crochet project at the same time. Anything else is too much for me to handle.
