@stephaniepixie @Canageek I'm not exactly sure how to get CBC Gem,. Do I need to be in Canada. Are there simple reliable steps to make myself "be" in Canada?

@poleguy @stephaniepixie I'm in Canada so I can't tell you if it's Canada only, or if you just need an account. I suspect it's Canada only due to licensing issues.

if you're outside of Canada and wanted to pretend to be inside, you would need a VPN most likely and that's very easy to set up, but a bit of a minefield since so many of them are sketchy as hell and will spy on you

@poleguy @stephaniepixie And aside from avoid nordvpn like the plague, I don't have much advice there because I've never set one up, you're in the right place that if you want to ask about that. I'm sure a bunch of battle hard into open source nerds will be very willing to write you a step-by-step guide

It's funny... My wife just borrowed a Peacock account password that her sister pays for to watch some ice skating. As I predicted, although the previews work fine on linux, as soon as you pay for peacock it will only serve ads and shows a black screen rather than the paid content. I think it is widevine DRM stuff. But she has a chromebook, so watched it there.

I'm sure I can figure out how to pay for a VPN. But I'm not so keen on it.

I use wireguard to VPN home.

@poleguy @stephaniepixie I wonder if yt-dlp works on CBC Gem? I'll give it a try this morning, and if it works I could just put whichever episodes you're looking for on Google drive or Dropbox or whatever for you

@poleguy Ah, I missed the IL because it wasn't hashtagged so it was in a different colour on my client, and I have no idea where oakpark is, other than apparently Illinois (I should ask my husband, he's from Illinois)

@Canageek I just moved that bit up in my profile. You're the second person who has checked my profile and failed to determine where I was. It's often important to know where someone is to interpret their messages. Lot's of UK and German folks on here write from very different points-of-view.
