the AI industry is going to have us maintaining the current gaming PCs like Cuban cars
@mosssupply gonna be scrounging IRC channels for spare parts and troubleshooting tips. The 90s are baaaaaaack!
@mosssupply That garage full of old laptops I've got is gonna be worth SO MUCH!
@emeb @mosssupply I could run a datacenter off all those flea market Core 2 Duo laptops I've hoa... collected!

@mosssupply i feel like we are doing this with old 8/16-bit micros too.

/me looks at pile of commodore 64s and amiga 500s

@mosssupply And computers, cars, appliances…
@CStamp @mosssupply yeah but only in so far as you can obtain replacement parts. right to repair has a long way to go. I guess less of an issue in PCs. But cars have been a pretty big issue with right to repair
@CStamp @mosssupply Can't wait for my dishwasher subscription (Bosch+ w/ Experiences)

@ultranurd

[starts dishwasher, alert pops-up on app (required to use dishwasher)]:

"We detected your not using Finish detergent - the recommended detergent for Bosch EcoSmart AI dishwashers. Tap continue to acknowledge and start the washing process."

@CStamp @mosssupply

@CStamp

Yeah, I'm starting to look at my 2017 six-speed manual Honda Accord like a treasured Fabergé egg that I'll need to maintain the rest of my life.

@mosssupply

@mosssupply if I ever have to make a pc out of 7400 chips and microcontrollers, I'm going to be so angry.

@mosssupply Simply because RAM is 5x more expensive and SSDs 2x more expensive? And GPUs... Well, can you get those as a commoner?

The playstation 6 is going to be coming in 2032, isn't it?

@mosssupply Next thing you know the non-AI part of the industry's gonna have to actually think about space and speed efficiency and optimization in their code.

Sign of the apocalypse, I suspect.

Since you can run decent general models on a MacBook w/ 48GB RAM or such they just want to make sure this doesn’t become a basic configuration.
@mosssupply which is what we should have been doing already tbh
I'm already daily driving a 9-year-old HP laptop (I had TWO from 2017, but one recently died and gave its RAM and SSD to the other) and a 15-year-old iMac (resuscitated with Debian and surprisingly usable) and I assume this state of affairs will continue.
@mosssupply I've already taken one machine (main homelab) down and replaced it with a SFF mini pc I had around because many of it's parts can be used on my personal computer. I didn't want it plugged in and get damaged.
@mosssupply what is the equivalent of making new aesbestos brake shoe linings by hand? I feel like I'm already doing that

@mosssupply

I'd actually wonder what do you end up doing with the prebuilts in the market.

Or the portable gaming PCs, like GPD.

@mosssupply And what of all the digital baby pictures?
@mosssupply It is swallowing all the components.
@mosssupply I was actually considering buying an NVidia 1080 to make such a box. To play some @veloren

@mosssupply next to me I have no fewer than four laptops. None was built in this DECADE. And over there is a Sony PDA that was almost not built in this century!

They work fine.

@mosssupply
I wonder if we can crowd source DDR5 production
@mosssupply
And just like they dont have fuel for their old, maintained cars, we wont have power for those PCs... Let alone some clean water and something to eat... Or a habitable Planet to use it on.
@mosssupply Honestly I'm working on a game right now and I'm using OpenGL instead of Vulkan for this exact reason. We might all be running toasters in the near future.
@mosssupply already tapping the local trans social anarchy network. Got 16gb of ddr4 out of it.

@mosssupply Well, we only have to outlast them until the bubble pops.

Let's get gamers invested in making that happen, shall we?

@mosssupply plot twist
@shadows @mosssupply the venerable, but capable, e-machine
@shadows @mosssupply by 'never obsolete' they mean made obsolete.
@shadows @mosssupply I mean, you can use the case.
@mosssupply probably not what Bunnie Huang had in mind when he talked about heirloom laptops, but there we go

@mosssupply

My 2016 gaming rig will keep humming along I hope (looks at hybrid SSD warily)

@mosssupply yup, right up until you can buy high end GPUs for 10% of retail by the hundreds with a crate of DDR5 thrown in for free.
@mosssupply Reddit is already full of stories of ppl dumpster diving electronics and PC outlets for spare parts!

@mosssupply
We will have bulky DIY RAM kits bolted to the side of the chassis, that make weird noises, wired in by whatever cabling was available + some copper salvaged from old phone lines for good measure.

No-one will know how it will work, but if the RAM purrs, then the RAM is happy

@mosssupply How do I put the smoke back inside the GPU?
@mosssupply Oh, very good 👏👏👏
@mosssupply it’s John Titor’s world we just live in it
@mosssupply and that's the only good thing about it.
