Routine blood test for annual checkup... saw about 18 people at the lab. 2 masked (procedure masks only), including 1 lab tech. Someone getting tests asked the lab tech why he was wearing a mask (!) because, she said "I've very immunocompromised and can't afford to get sick". The lab tech had a cold. The immunocompromised woman was not wearing a mask.

(Americans are stupid people, apparently... or exceedingly subject to social pressures).

Yes, I was N95 masked, it's a doctor's office folks, people are in there for testing because they are sick for one reason or another, or visiting the doctor because they caught something. 🙄

@ai6yr i met a homeowner to rent from a few months ago and they said, a dozen times, "oh i'm a germaphobe, that's why a lot of the plastic is still on appliances and there's some corrosion on fixtures because i always clean everything with bleach"

of course, i'm the only one wearing an n95.
i even offered them sealed spare masks.
it just doesn't click for people.

the minimization messaging is fully installed in their minds. even when they "somehow keep getting sick" multiple times a year.

@ai6yr Guess I was lucky when I went in to UW & all staff was masked.
Knowing what I know now, I will mask in medical offices, on public transportation, & in airports/on planes for the rest of my life. (I especially think about the vacations I went on that got partially ruined by picking up a bug on the plane & if I'd only known to mask...)

Same here.

I look back thru records of the Before Time, and so often "Bye, I'm off to a convention! Talk to you all next week!" was followed by "I have con crud." We used to think that was normal.

But I started masking in public 2020 and never stopped, and not so much as a cold in six years now.

@Kathmandu Yep. As a classroom teacher, I also used to be sick about 4 times a school year, lost my voice at least once a year, and had at least one sinus infection a year. Since I started masking indoors, I have only been sick a couple of times in the past few years. (Alas, got COVID on a backpacking trip 2 years ago, which sucked, so being outdoors is not a 100% guarantee of not being infected.)

@ai6yr my wife works in a cardiac center OR. she wears a mask all day long because she pretty much has to but even when walking the halls she keeps it on to protect herself and her patients. one of her biggest gripes (she has a few) is when other staff complain about their peers coming in when sick and then come in sick themselves, sneezing and dripping all over the place, no mask, and then justify it with "everyone else does it."
