This was one of the designs in the competition to build the Clifton Suspension Bridge. imho it should have won. Designed by William Bridges (!) with the help of the female engineer Sarah Guppy (holds the first ever patent for a bridge design) it looks steampunk or something from Gormenghast!
The units that hold up the bridge (so no supporting cables required) were to contain: a tavern, a stable block, a market, museum, granary, corn exchange, a library and more.
