Laid off :/

I know:

- Unity C#
- Rust
- Python

I can learn:

- Anything

I am in Massachusetts. Remote work would be great too

I've 8 years of experience as an MIT software engineer specializing in research simulation platform projects. I would prefer: not creating the next big AI thing, not making weapons, never having to think about blockchain anything.

Anyone got anything?

@esther_alter I'd say apply at Igalia, but of course there are no promises.
@caitp any idea what the salary range is?
@esther_alter I can't really discuss that (much as I disagree with the policy), but I'll say the range is very "narrow", being a cooperative, and the actual value is a product of revenue minus operations, divied up evenly
@caitp ok thanks. Gosh, being paid to think about gstreamer is very compelling

@esther_alter I know this is no help but the job market is utter shit right now. I hope you have better luck than many of us have had. With Rust I think you can contribute to some open source projects that may become commercial (Zed, Warp, etc.)

Maybe check this board too. https://beyond-tabs.com (beyond the obvious job boards).

If you have any robotics experience, my employer ( https://tri.global ): we're desperately hiring a research engineer role, there's AI going on but barely any LLM, humanely sourced data, and it's not commercial hyperscale glurge.

If you don't mind a bit more AI in the company mission, our recent "too commercial for a research lab" spinoff is also hiring https://ats.rippling.com/walden-robotics/jobs ; again, it's not LLM glurge sort of AI, but it is supporting the gradient descent of tensors. Their job descriptions are less "already know about robotics" I think but also as a new startup their pants are on fire all the time.

@esther_alter We have open roles but the work isn’t as exciting as you’re used to. Being cautious about LLMs but it appears our board wants us to research feasibility. At least we are measuring DORA metrics before and after..

@esther_alter does ANYONE in the USA still have a job?
@RueNahcMohr not that I’m aware of
@esther_alter huh, how long can Rump maintain "The economy is doing great!"
@RueNahcMohr until people do substantially more than trust the electoral process

@RueNahcMohr @esther_alter I still have one (for now?) but I'm looking for a better one and it's... not going great.

(My employer is trying to outsource everything to contractors and AI and you can imagine how well that's working for them.)

@esther_alter I don't know anything right now, but what kind of simulations were you working on? I can definitely keep an eye out

@esther_alter Check the red hat jobs site, jobs.redhat.com, I dont know of a specific job that would fit you, but we have offices in boston, also hire a TON of remote workers, and at least some of those languages you listed are all over the linux codebase. Worth a look.

@esther_alter So far the best job board I've found is https://welcometothejungle.com/ -- might give that a shot. Better quality jobs there than the usual places.

Main caveat is that if you apply via the site (which is optional), make sure you didn't sign up using a throwaway name and email, because they'll be using that in the application. :-P
